How Often Should I Groom My Dog? A Breed-by-Breed Guide

Poodles need grooming every 6–8 weeks. Huskies every 3 months. Here's exactly how to set a schedule for your dog.

Most dogs don't groom themselves the way cats do. Without regular professional grooming, coats mat, nails curl, and ear canals fill with debris. But how often is often enough?

The honest answer: it depends on your dog's coat type, not their breed name.

Double-coat breeds (Labs, Goldens, Huskies, Shepherds)

These breeds blow their coat seasonally — twice a year, usually in spring and fall. During a blowout, daily brushing and a professional de-shedding treatment help remove the undercoat safely. Between blowouts, every 8–12 weeks is typically enough for a bath and brush.

Styling breeds (Poodles, Doodles, Schnauzers, Shih Tzus, Maltese)

These breeds don't shed but their hair grows continuously. Without haircuts every 6–8 weeks, the coat mats — particularly behind the ears, in the armpits, and under the collar. Once a coat mats severely, a shave-down is often the kindest option.

Short-haired breeds (Beagles, Boxers, Greyhounds)

These dogs need the least grooming. A bath every 8–12 weeks and a monthly nail trim is usually sufficient. They still benefit from de-shedding during seasonal transitions.

Seniors and puppies

Puppies under 16 weeks benefit from an intro groom every 4–6 weeks — not for appearance, but for socialization. Getting them comfortable with bathing, blow-drying, and handling during this window shapes how they respond to grooming for life.

Senior dogs often need more frequent, shorter sessions. Arthritic dogs shouldn't stand for long stretches, so splitting services across two visits every 6–8 weeks can work well.

The real answer

If you can't remember the last time your dog was groomed and their nails are clicking on the floor — that's the answer. Most dogs do best on a 6–8 week schedule regardless of breed. Consistency keeps the coat manageable, nails short, and appointments stress-free.
