Grooming Senior Dogs: How the Process Changes After 10

Grooming a 14-year-old Shih Tzu is a different job than grooming a 3-year-old one. The coat may be the same, but the dog is not.

What changes as dogs age

Senior dogs often have less muscle mass and more joint inflammation. Standing on a grooming table for 90 minutes is simply painful for many older dogs. Their skin may be thinner and more sensitive. Circulation is slower, which means they get cold faster during bathing and drying.

Cognitively, some senior dogs experience confusion and disorientation in unfamiliar environments — the kind of stress that a traditional salon, with its noise and other animals, amplifies significantly.

What good senior grooming looks like

Breaks. A senior groom should include multiple rest periods. No extended periods of standing without support under the hindquarters for dogs with arthritis.

Gentle products. Senior skin calls for softer shampoos with moisturizing properties and no harsh detergents.

Shorter sessions. Some senior dogs do better with their services split across two shorter appointments rather than one long one.

One-on-one attention. This is where mobile grooming has an enormous advantage. Your senior dog gets 100% of the groomer's focus, in the familiar environment of your own driveway, with no other dogs to stress them.

Red flags to watch during grooming

If your dog yelps when lifted or positioned, it's a sign of pain. If they seem disoriented or confused, go slower and quieter. If they're panting excessively, take a break.
